Nigeria and Gavi Launch $191 Million Health System Strengthening Grant to Boost Immunization and Save Lives

In a significant move to fortify Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure, the Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has officially launched the Health System Strengthening Phase 3 (HSS-3) grant—an ambitious $191 million initiative set to be implemented over the next four years.

A Lifeline for Child Health and Immunization

The HSS-3 grant is designed to enhance Nigeria’s health systems and immunization programs, with a special focus on reducing deaths from vaccine-preventable diseases among children. This initiative marks a critical step in achieving long-term public health resilience and reducing child mortality across the country.

Collaborative and Inclusive Design

The comprehensive grant was developed through a multi-stakeholder planning process, coordinated by the Nigerian government. Key players involved include:

  • Federal Ministry of Health
  • National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA)
  • World Health Organization (WHO)
  • UNICEF
  • Civil society organizations
  • Private sector representatives

This inclusive approach ensures that the initiative is grounded in national priorities and has broad institutional support for implementation.

Strong International Endorsement

Gavi’s technical review panel has highly endorsed the HSS-3 grant, citing its:

  • Strategic vision
  • Integration of digital health innovations
  • Commitment to sustainability and long-term impact

Such endorsement highlights the global confidence in Nigeria’s health strategy and the potential of HSS-3 to serve as a model for other nations.

Looking Ahead

With implementation set to span four years, the HSS-3 grant is expected to catalyze a transformative impact on Nigeria’s healthcare delivery, especially at the grassroots level. By strengthening immunization systems and promoting digital innovations, the initiative is poised to save thousands of lives and build a healthier future for Nigerian children.
